Since 2020, home color trends have heavily favored creamy neutrals, warm pastels, and organic tones moving away from the cooler color palette that ruled the 2010s. 2023 stands to shake up the neutral look as homeowners have become more adventurous when it comes to decorating their homes. Striking shades and playful color stories are increasingly growing in popularity as the creative side is tapped into this year. This year’s clear theme is warmer and thought-provoking colors that curate a one-of-a-kind atmosphere throughout the home.
Magenta - The Color of 2023
Pantone Color Institute named “Viva Magenta” as the color of the year as executive director Leatrice Eiseman explains, “Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.” This beautiful shade could make for a striking accent wall or a bold statement in bedrooms.
Captivating Reds and Oranges
With the color of the year favoring warmer tones full of depth, it comes as no surprise that shades of red, orange, and even darker hues of yellow have jumped into popularity. A Gallup survey found that close to half of the U.S. workforce has a hybrid option to work both at the office and from the comfort of their homes. This change in the work environment could be considered a catalyst in the push for vibrant color choices as more Americans are spending time at home. After all, these captivating hues stimulate energy and creativity keeping up engagement throughout the day.
Blushing Pinks
Shades of pink are also predicted to be another big color for 2023. For younger homeowners, muted neutrals have not been as popular. A soft, delicate pink shade can bring a family room together without feeling flat giving the space its own bubbly personality. On the opposite end of the spectrum, energetic pinks have been showcased as bold accent choices bringing a new exciting dynamic into a room.
Playful Purples
Another show-stopping color that will be seen more this year is purple. In 2022, lilac and violet tones were held in high adoration across trends both inside and outside of the home. In 2023, the trend has continued strong as the color purple is often associated with nobility and luxury. Darker hues have been used as a substitute for black bringing more warmth and depth to a space. This diverse color can be utilized to create unique color stories in just a few shades.
Down to Earth Hues
Earthy tones are classic as colors found in nature can easily be incorporated into seamless color stories in any room. Forest green and other jewel tones like emerald started coming into popularity at the end of the 2022 season. This has continued into 2023 as the shades create a feeling of connection to nature and growth even in the most urban home settings. Additional shades to look out for are olives, dynamic blues, and warmer browns. Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williamsexplains, “Greens, blues, and browns can make any space feel safe, calming, and grounded yet still energized." This color palette can be applied to bedrooms to make the space feel inviting and relaxing at the end of the day.
